Frequently Asked Questions
Depends on the condition of the surface:
Painted brick or render:
Acrylic render can bond to it.
Cement render usually can’t.
Old or damaged render:
May need stripping or patching.
Best to inspect before quoting.
Tiled surfaces (e.g. bathroom walls):
Microcement can go directly over tiles (after prepping).
Internal painted plasterboard:
Suitable for Venetian plaster with correct priming.
If you’re not sure what’s underneath, ask for a site inspection — applying the wrong finish over the wrong surface causes peeling or cracks.
Lifespan depends on surface prep, use, and exposure:
Finish Expected Lifespan
Cement Render 15–20 years (with repainting)
Acrylic Render 20–30 years
Venetian Plaster 10–15 years (indoors only)
Microcement 10–20 years (if sealed + maintained)
Keep in mind:
External render needs repainting every 7–10 years.
Microcement in wet areas needs resealing every few years.
Venetian plaster can last decades indoors with little upkeep.
Each finish suits different surfaces and budgets:
Type Best For Pros Cons
Cement Render Exterior brick/block walls Cost-effective, strong base Prone to cracking, needs painting
Acrylic Render Exterior + painted surfaces Flexible, fast-drying, fewer cracks More expensive than cement, not breathable
Venetian Plaster Interior feature walls Smooth, polished finish, breathable, eco-friendly Labour-intensive, not cheap
Microcement Wet areas, floors, kitchens Seamless, waterproof (when sealed), modern look Requires sealing, specialist skill, higher cost
Still unsure? Cement and acrylic are good for exteriors. Venetian and microcement are better for decorative or wet-area interiors.
Here’s how they stack up:
Surface Waterproof?
Cement Render No – must be painted or sealed
Acrylic Render Water-resistant but not fully sealed
Venetian Plaster Breathable, not waterproof
Microcement Yes – if sealed correctly
So:
Only microcement can be made fully waterproof (showers, floors).
Acrylic and cement need a topcoat or membrane.
Venetian plaster is decorative — not suitable for wet zones.
